Donteregan Sanders, 20, has been charged with murder and providing false information to police after 64-year-old Earlean Deloney was found unconscious outside of a New Albany home on Nov. 16.
Police reports indicate Deloney was found on the front porch, but her injuries were not consistent of those of a fall. Authorities also found a pool of blood in the street and a trail of blood leading up to the porch.
Deloney was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital where she later died of her injuries. Witnesses told police she and Sanders were arguing prior to her being found.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Sanders’ cousin told police the two were going to drive Deloney’s car to another store after running errands all day.
When Deloney asked where they would be going, Sanders responded with “deez nuts,” which upset the elderly woman.
The cousin said Deloney then told Sanders that he could “not speak to her that way,” which made him mad. Sanders allegedly then began cursing at Deloney and spit on her before smacking her in the face.
The cousin said he went back inside as the two continued arguing, but when he came back outside, Deloney was on the ground behind her car “bleeding heavily.”
A child inside the home said they heard the smack and when they looked outside the window, they saw Sanders stomping on Deloney’s head and shoulder multiple times.
Another man, who made the call to 911, told police Sanders had anger issues and said he and Sanders moved the 64-year-old’s body to the porch.
Police said a second child inside the home saw Sanders come back inside with blood on his hands.
Witnesses said after the incident, Sanders changed his clothes and left, taking the clothes he had been wearing with him. Police said a family member called Sanders while at the hospital and he said that Deloney hit him with a metal chain and spike which caused him to snap.
Sanders was later found at a bowling alley in Clarksville. According to police, officer-worn bodycam video shows a detective finding him inside a locked stall. Sanders initially gave the officer a fake name and claimed to be a juvenile, but once the stall door opened, the detective recognized him and placed him under arrest.
The affidavit said Sanders’ hands were wet, leading police to believe he was trying to wash his hands in the toilet bowl water.
Police later found a garbage bag with Sander’s clothing behind his girlfriend’s house. Inside the bag they also found a pair of shoes with blood on them.
