Neighbor wasn't surprised by latest shooting in PRP; 'It went off so quick'

Gerry Rumbaugh was sitting on his back patio when he heard the gunshots ring out near the high school. He said gun violence in his neighborhood isn't uncommon.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Sunday night didn't go as planned for many attending the Pleasure Ridge Park and Male High School football game. That's because gunshots rang out in the parking lot forcing attendees to rush to the exits.

A 22-year-old Louisville man was arrested near where the shooting took place.

According to an arrest citation, multiple witnesses told JCPS security at the game that a suspect, Damon Jerome Williams Jr., was seen throwing two guns over the fence behind the visitor's bleachers.

Williams has been charged with two counts of possession of a firearm on school property and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, however JCPS said his arrest is separate from the shooting which left two juveniles injured.

Gerry Rumbaugh, who lives near the school said said he heard the gunshots ring out Sunday night while sitting on his back patio.

"At first I thought it was an automatic weapon, cause it went off so quick, it was bang bang bang!" he said.

Rumbaugh said he was surprised to hear about half a dozen shots. His granddaughter, Kaitlyn, was also at his house when the shots rang out.

"I didn't know what it was, but it was loud, like loud," she said. Soon after the shots, Rumbaugh said a rush of police and ambulance cars filled the street. Unfortunately, he says it's a normal occurrence in his neighborhood.

"It happens quiet often, you hear gunshots around here often, two or three times a week," Rumbaugh explained.

Rumbaugh is pushing for a heavier police presence in the area with the hopes of bringing down the gun violence and other problems in the community.

"We don't see police around here much," Rumbaugh said. "You never see them at all, actually."

Both Gerry and his granddaughter said they want their home and neighborhood to feel safe for all his grandchildren.
