Man accused of fatally shooting victim in Highlands appears in court

According to Richie William's arrest citation, he is accused of shooting and killing 29-year-old Montay Wade on Baxter Avenue.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The man accused of shooting and killing a man in the fatal Original Highlands shooting appeared in court on Friday.

Richie Williams, 37, is charged with murder and possession of a handgun by a prohibited person.

He is charged for the fatal shooting that happened in the 900 block of Baxter Avenue.

Both 20-year-old Michael Bachelor Jr. and 29-year-old Montay Wade were killed that night and another person was injured.

According to William's arrest citation, he is accused of shooting and killing Wade on Baxter Avenue.

LMPD said an off-duty office heard shots rang out and and saw Williams run from the scene with a gun.

Police said Williams was treated at the hospital for a gun shot wound, and that's when the off-duty officer was reportedly able to identify him based on the clothes he was wearing.

Councilmember Ben Reno-Weber, whose district covers much of the Highlands, called the incident a targeted attack.

"No one should be fearful anywhere in our community, and we have to keep demanding and pushing and fighting for the resources that we need in order to, for our neighbors to feel safe," he said.

Williams pleaded not guilty in court Friday morning. His bond was set at $500,000.

Police said they are still investigating Bachelor's death, who they said was shot around the corner on Morton Avenue at around the same time the shooting on Baxter Avenue happened.

Anyone with information is asked to call LMPD's anonymous tip line at (502) 574-LMPD (5673).
