As winter weather approaches Kentuckiana, JCPS is preparing for possible NTI

According to the district, no more snow days is the goal.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — As winter weather approaches Kentuckiana, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) is preparing parents for what to expect during inclement weather.

When snow and ice are on the roads, students will be at home, district officials said Thursday. That being said, JCPS students will still be doing school work.

TIMELINE: An Arctic blast is coming to Kentuckiana. What to expect, how cold will it get?

The district is eliminating snow days, instead opting for non-traditional instruction (NTI). This is similar at-home instruction to what JCPS and other school districts utilized during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a letter sent to parents, JCPS said it also isn't planning to have delays or early dismissals except in rare occasions.

The district said it's possible NTI could be used as early as next week given the frigid forecast.

On Thursday and Friday, students will bring home materials, like a device and charger, in preparation for potential NTI days.

JCPS said short-term NTI is self-paced and students won't receive live, online instruction from their teachers.

If in-person classes are canceled, JCPS said parents and guardians will be notified through the district's main email and text service, School Messenger. Local media, JCPS social media and the district's website will also be updated.

Decisions on whether school is canceled will be made by 5 a.m. on school days.

After school activities, like athletics games and clubs, will also be canceled on NTI days.

Remember, there is no school for JCPS students on Jan. 15 in observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
