Nelson County Schools cancels classes on Friday | 'We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience'

Students and staff within Nelson County Schools have protested against the school board's plan to merge the district's two high schools.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — All Nelson County Schools are canceled for a second day in a row.

In a letter sent from the district, Superintendent Wes Bradley said the school closures are due to staffing shortages, including teachers and bus drivers.

"We understand that this may pose challenges for many of our families, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience," Bradley said.

Bradley said it appeared the staffing shortages are because of "ongoing district facility planning decisions" regarding potentially combining Thomas Nelson High School and Nelson County High School.

Students and staff within the school district have protested against that plan on both Wednesday and Thursday

The board voted 3-2 on Tuesday to continue with that plan, but no formal decision has been made according to the superintendent.

The two days will be made up either in January or May of 2024 Bradley said.

Curt Merrifield, the principal at Thomas Nelson High School, said on social media that administrators will be at four schools from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday handing out meals.

Those schools are:

  • New Haven School
  • Boston School
  • Bloomfield Middle School
  • Coxs Creek Elementary School

"A big shout out to the community members who made these contributions and donations in an effort to support families," he said.
