Carrollton hosts vigil, mourns tragic loss in house fire

Neighbors in Carrollton gathered for a vigil in honor of the family members lost in a structure fire.

CARROLLTON, Kentucky — Emotions in Carrollton are still raw.

In the small Kentucky town of about 4,000, hundreds of neighbors grieved at a vigil outside the Carroll County Memorial Hospital for the lives lost in a house fire.

“In a little town, just about everybody knows everybody," said Roger Onan, reflecting on the tight knit community.

“This is such a small community, it’s a little bit larger than where we live," said Iva Onan. "I’m sure everyone knows all of the people that live around local. And I’m sure their hearts go out to the families.”

Authorities said they believe the house fire killed multiple family members, but as of Thursday night, no deaths have been confirmed by police.

Thursday evening, the Carroll County Memorial Hospital held a vigil to grieve the lives lost.

Campbellsville residents Iva and Roger Onan said in times of tragedy, they expect the community to lean on one another.

“It brings out the best in people, and that’s what you want to see," Roger said.

The house fire was reported around 6 a.m. in the 200 block of 5th Street.

First responders arrived on scene in under 10 minutes and found the house engulfed in flames.

Carrollton Police Det. Dave Roberts said a 3-year-old girl was found at the back door. She was taken to the Carroll County Memorial Hospital but has since been airlifted to a Louisville hospital.

Smoke continued to smolder into the night.

Carrollton Police, with the help of Kentucky State Police arson investigators and the State Fire Marshall's Office, are looking into the cause of the fire.
