68-year-old man facing murder charges and more after allegedly shooting a man outside his New Albany home

A New Albany man is now facing murder charges. Initially he told police the person he shot at his home was armed with a sword.

NEW ALBANY, Ind — A southern Indiana man was charged with murder Monday after police said he shot and killed an unarmed man outside his home over the weekend.

68-year-old Kevin Campbell, of New Albany, is facing one count of murder, one count of involuntary manslaughter, one count of criminal recklessness, and other charges. On Saturday, Indiana State Police said the victim, 41-year-old Christopher Proctor, was armed with a sword.

On Monday, ISP said no sword was involved and Proctor was not armed when he tapped on Campbell's window.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Campbell and Proctor lived together at the home, however Campbell told police Proctor was no longer allowed there.

Campbell told ISP that Proctor had tapped on his bedroom window once in the morning of Oct. 26 and then again hours later. He said he retrieved a small caliber rifle and answered the door the second time. There, police said, he was met by Proctor who began approaching the door toward Campbell. Police said Campbell fired a shot, striking Proctor in the chest.

Proctor fell back and died at the scene, according to police.

According to court documents, Campbell admitted to shooting Proctor, but said he didn't intend to kill him. He only wanted to fire a warning shot to scare Proctor.

Campbell told police he panicked after the shooting and first laid in his bed for 20 minutes before deciding to hid Proctor's body with a trash can and piece of carpet. He then grabbed a sword Proctor had left inside the home and unsheathed it, placing it on the doorstep. He admitted to trying to claim defense, according to the affidavit.

It took two hours for Campbell to call police. During that time, Campbell told investigators that he tried to put Proctor's body in a truck bed to dump his body in a discreet location, but he wasn't physically able to. He said he was afraid to get in trouble.

Campbell is now facing charges of murder, manslaughter, criminal recklessness with a firearm and obstruction of justice.

Saturday, ISP said Campbell and Proctor had known each other for a year.

Campbell had previously contacted New Albany police to keep Proctor from coming onto his property. Police confirmed Proctor had personal items inside the home and that Campbell no longer wanted to associate with him.

Campbell was already being held at the Floyd County Jail on murder charges. Campbell entered a not guilty plea.

The judge did not approve bond for Campbell. The trial for this case begins on March 3.
