Special meeting called to vote on JCPS' transportation plan for next school year

The measure was originally tabled after an audit revealed what led to the transportation chaos at the beginning of the school year.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Jefferson County School Board has called a special meeting to vote on transportation options for next school year.

Board members Linda Duncan, Chris Kolb and Joe Marshall called for the meeting to be held on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the VanHoose Education Center, according to a letter released by JCPS spokeswoman Carolyn Callahan.

The board had originally postponed the vote until April 16 due to information from an audit that revealed what led to the transportation chaos at the beginning of the school year.

Parents, students and teachers opposing the motion had asked the board to hold off on a decision.

The options are:

  1. Cut transportation for a majority of magnet and traditional school students.
  2. Create magnet and traditional school hubs, where parents are responsible for getting their students to school and home.
  3. No transportation changes at all.
  4. Maintain bus services at magnet and traditional schools, but only to those that meet a 70% threshold of economically disadvantaged students.

Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio had recommended Option 1, which would have cut transportation for a majority of students attending traditional and magnet schools in the district.
