JCPS plans to increase number of bulk meals after running out on first day of distribution

The district said it didn't anticipate the popularity of bulk pick up.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jefferson County Public Schools said it ran out of meals hours after starting their first day of bulk meal distribution.

The district said they had planned for three meal distribution sites to have bulk pick up options. These would have enough food to feed a child for breakfast and lunch for five days.

JCPS confirmed more than 5,000 meals were gone by 10:30 a.m.

It was a first come, first serve system and there was no way for the district to anticipate the popularity of bulk pick up.

Next Tuesday, JCPS said they are planning to have close to double the number of boxes at each site.

JCPS distributed nearly 230,000 meals last summer to children in its summer programs and at its walk-in and walk-up sites.

The JCPS Summer Meals Program is available to all children 18 years old or younger until July 26.
