New solar-powered streetlights popping up in southern Indiana neighborhoods

Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore said more will be installed over the next two years.

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — A southern Indiana community is benefiting from the power of the sun!

New solar-powered streetlights have been popping up along the streets of some Jeffersonville neighborhoods recently.

Mayor Mike Moore said officials have now found a way to add streetlights in Oak Park, Riverside and Capitol Hills where traditional street lighting has previously been improbable.

That's because the electric lines for many of the homes in these neighborhoods were on the back of their property.

On Wednesday, Moore, Councilman Joe Paris and City Engineer Andy Crouch inspected one of the new streetlights in the Capitol Hills neighborhood.

According to the city, residents should be on the look out for more of these solar-powered lights to be installed over the next two years.

These new streetlights aren't the only solar power development to come to Jeffersonville this week.

An Ontario-based solar company announced plans to build an $800 million manufacturing site in Jeffersonville's River Ridge Commerce Center.
