LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville Metro Police officer who was shot in the line of duty earlier this year, continues to make "encouraging progress" in his recovery, according to the department.

Officer Brandon Haley was shot in the chest in the Chickasaw neighborhood in September. Body camera video shows Haley following a vehicle and when the car stops, two men run into a nearby home. Haley chases after the suspects, but gunshots can be heard coming from the home and Haley immediately falls to the ground. He screams out that he’s been hit.

Haley spent several days in the hospital before being released on Sept. 25.

On Thursday, LMPD said Haley continues to make progress in his recovery and he continues to improve physically and mentally every day. The department said Haley has "overcome the previous stagnation and is now making positive strides."

"With the support of home health services and his dedicated team at the University of Louisville, he is steadily improving," LMPD wrote in a social media post.

Haley will begin more intensive phases of his rehabilitation, focusing on strenuous physical therapy, in the new year.

"His entire family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support and kindness received from the Louisville community," LMPD said. "During this time, they humbly request your ongoing thoughts and prayers, which serve as a source of strength as Brandon continues to heal."

On Nov. 30, a Louisville grand jury indicted three men in connection the shooting that injured Haley.

Dominique Thompson, 27, was indicted on attempted murder of a police officer, among several other serious charges. The other two men were indicted on drug and firearm charges.
