LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Metro Housing Authority (LMHA) is getting more money to make public housing safer for residents, according to a news release.

The agency was awarded $1,553,600 through the Lead-Based Paint Capital Fund Program to address lead-related hazards and $600,000 to test for and mitigate radon in public housing properties.

The $1.554 million grant will be used to reduce lead-based paint and related hazards in 913 housing units across LMHA properties.

The grant will fund lead-paint risk assessments, inspections, and abatement efforts in key developments.

LMHA has previously removed lead-based paint hazards but they say this new funding will allow further remediation to address any residual risks, even in non-hazardous cases, and provide complete clearance for several properties.

The agency says Parkway Place will receive additional lead-paint remediation efforts, surpassing even federal requirements, to ensure a safer living environment for residents.

The properties included in this program are:

  • Avenue Plaza
  • Parkway Place Housing Community
  • H. Temple Spears
  • 2301 Terrier Court

The $600,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is to test for radon.

The release says radon, a colorless and odorless gas, is the second leading cause of lung cancer, making it crucial to identify and mitigate its presence in housing units.

The testing, which began in August 2023, will continue across LMHA properties, with mitigation efforts in any unit found to have elevated radon levels.

The goal is for mitigation to be completed by August 2026.

The agency says testing for radon in Phase I properties is already complete and mitigation of elevated levels is underway.

Phase II testing will begin in November 2024.
