Man arrested after speeding at nearly 120mph before fatal Bardstown Road crash

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A man is in custody after one person died and another was injured in a crash on in Bardstown Road, according to a report from the Louisville Metro Police Department.

They said officers responded to a crash on Bardstown Road at Bardstown Ralls Road around 1:10 p.m.

A driver, later identified as 42-year-old Yusnier Bernal, was heading north on Bardstown Road when he collided with an SUV with two people inside. 

According to witnesses, Bernal was drag racing with a blue BMW going northbound in the 9100 block of Bardstown Road. The witness said both vehicles were driving at a high rate of speed prior to the crash.

The impact caused debris to go everywhere and for the cars to be spread across both northbound and southbound lanes of Bardstown Road investigators said.

First responders from EMS and Fern Creek Fire responded to the scene. Firefighters helped the driver get out of the SUV, and Bernal got out without help.

The SUV was trying to turn out of Bardstown Falls Road.

The driver of the SUV was seriously injured and then taken to University Hospital by EMS. The passenger in the SUV, identified as 77-year-old Myrtle Wacker, sustained multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. 

Bernal also sustained injuries and was taken transported to University Hospital by EMS with non-life threatening injuries.

A data recorder inside Bernal's car showed he was driving 119.6 miles per hour at the time of the crash.

Bernal is facing charged of murder, assault, wanton endangerment, operating a vehicle with an expires license and speeding 26 miles per hour or over the speed limit.

Bernal pleaded not guilty to the charges and has a bond of $250,000. His preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 6 at 9 a.m.
