Community members sign last beams going up in Norton West Louisville Hospital

This will be west Louisville's first hospital in 150 years.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The upcoming Norton West Louisville Hospital is one step closer to officially opening.

On Wednesday, community members got a chance to sign some of the final beams ahead of the project's finish on South 28th Street.

Soon enough, they will provide 24/7 emergency department care to treat patients, as well as a retail pharmacy and pediatric space.

WHAS11 News caught up with Chief Administrative Officer Corenza Townsend, who stressed the importance of having a hospital in west Louisville and right at the community's doorstep.

"If you have an emergency that doesn't necessarily mean that you need to have an ambulance, but you need to have a car ride there or transportation there, that could be life-saving or the difference between life and death," she said. "So to be able to have a hospital in your community, within walking distance or to have access to transportation to your hospital campus, or even to get regular care or primary care in the office, it makes a difference."

This will be west Louisville's first hospital in 150 years.

"It is crucial we have a hospital in west Louisville," Townsend said. "It's one thing to have hospitals in the city, but to have one in your neighborhood when we talk about access to care, that's the importance of this facility. Whether it be five years, 10 years, 150 years; 150 years is a long time We wanted to bring access to our community and here we are."

It's officially set to open on Nov. 11. Anyone who wishes to tour the space before opening day can sign up at this link.
