Louisville mayor preparing city resources as extreme heat moves in

Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90s with triple digit heat indexes as we head into the weekend.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg says the city is preparing resources to help residents stay cool as extreme heat expected to last all week.

Resources will be available to vulnerable residents who are negatively impacted by the weather.

Operation White Flag will go into effect when temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90s later this week.

“Remember to check on your neighbors, check on your loved ones, elderly and disabled, that might need some help so that everyone stays safe, cool and hydrated during these extreme weather conditions,” Greenberg said.

The mayor announced eight of its Neighborhood Place locations and 14 of Louisville Metro Park and Recreation community centers will operate as cooling centers during regular business hours. Some of the community centers partner with Dare to Care Food Bank for their Kids Café program which offers free evening meals to children 18 and under.

There are also resources for seniors who are looking for relief. The Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Service still has free fans available for those 60 and older and those who have a documented disability.

The Senior Nutrition Program has 14 sites for seniors that provide lunch and activities at air-conditioned facilities.

Operation White Flag will also be designated at three Louisville homeless shelters. A white flag will fly outside of a participating shelter. Here are locations participating:

  • Wayside Christian Mission (accepts cats and dogs)
  • St. Vincent de Paul (for men only)
  • Salvation Army Center (day shelter only)

Greenberg said day shelter space is available at the Salvation Army and Wayside Christian Mission as well as shelters dedicated for men, women and youth.

Those who are needing a lift to these locations can ride TARC for free. The person must tell the driver when boarding.

Other ways you can beat the heat in the Metro are using the Fairdale and Sun Valley pools which are open noon to 5 p.m. but have various hours throughout the summer. There are also plenty of spraygrounds and spraypads throughout Louisville where families can enjoy a little fun.
