'They become our family first and foremost': Southend Street Angels extends pop up shelter

Southend Street Angels founder Amanda Mills anticipates more people will head inside the shelter as temperatures don't get above freezing until later in the week.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Dozens of Louisvillians have sheltered inside Hope International AOH Church of God on Algonquin Parkway as temperatures continue to drop.

They're provided clothing, hygiene products, warm meals and a cot through Southend Street Angels.

"We're going through a hard time right now but I'm grateful," Susan Wall said.

Susan and her husband Gary were in immediate need when their water lines froze.

Luckily they were told about the pop up shelter, set up by Southend Street Angels at the church.

"If it wasn't for them to support us, being out there, for us to help us this wouldn't be possible," Gary said.

Southend Street Angels founder Amanda Mills anticipates more people will start to head inside the shelter as temperatures don't get above freezing until later in the week.

"They become our family first and foremost, and second of all, I'm a person of lived experience so I'm a firm believer that we heal by helping other people heal," Mills said.

Monday marks four days since Hope International AOH Church opened the temporary shelter, promising warmth and safety.

Mills is surprised by the outpour of donations.

"It's just those little gestures that come and lets people know 'hey I'm still human and people care about what I want,'" she said.

The donations are crucial, especially now since they're extending the shelter until Saturday morning.

They're meeting people where they're at.

"We've even provided some transportation for them if they need to get to this facility I know that can also be a challenge," Diane White, outreach director at Hope International AOH Church of God, said.

Exodus Family Ministries has transported Louisvillians to day shelters where they are provided showers and laundry services.

Southend Street Angels are still looking for more donations over the next couple of days.
