LOUISVILLE, Ky. — While most eyes were on Kentucky's governor race, some in Jefferson County voted on who would represent them on Metro Council.
Metro Council District 3
Keisha Dorsey vacated the District 3 seat after she left to work for the mayor’s office. Councilman Kumar Rushad currently holds this position. The area includes most of Shively, Cane Run Road and Algonquin Parkway.
Shameka Parrish-Wright won the District 3 seat, and defeated Independent Gibran Crook.
She announced her bid for the District 3 Metro Council seat in July. The advocate serves on several boards across the Metro including The Sowers of Justice Network, The Coalition for the Homeless, Feed Louisville and The Kentucky Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression according to her social media.
While running for mayor, she said Louisville needs to reimagine what policing looks like and that there’s a need to invest more in community programs.
Metro Council District 6
David James also left to work for the mayor’s office, leaving the District 6 seat vacant too. Metro Council then appointed Phillip Baker as the next District 6 representative. He still currently holds the seat. The district includes Old Louisville, Park Hill, Shelby Park and Algonquin neighborhoods.
Phil Baker will keep his District 6 seat and he beat Republican Judy Martin Stallard.
The incumbent has served as a family resource and youth center coordinator at Jefferson County Public Schools and as a multiple line agent with State Farm Insurance according to his biography on Louisville Metro’s website. He also worked under James as a community liaison.
Baker serves on the Kentucky Derby Festival Board and used to be on the boards for the ACLU of Kentucky and the Greater Louisville Association of Democrats.
Metro Council District 8
Cassie Chambers Armstrong won Congressman Morgan McGarvey’s previous Senate seat, leaving the Metro Council District 8 spot open. Councilmember Ben Reno-Weber currently holds the seat after being appointed to the position. District 8 covers most of the Highlands, down Bardstown Road to Goldsmith Lane.
Another incumbent, Ben Reno-Weber (D), won in District 8. He is on three Metro Council committees: the Budget & Appropriations Committee, the Government Oversight/Audit & Appointments Committee, and the Planning & Zoning Committee according to his biography on the Louisville Metro website.
Reno-Weber has a background in technology; he used to run a tech start up and was the former director of the Microsoft-funded Future of Work initiative.
