LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After a Kentucky State representative was initially disqualified in her reelection bid due to claims of improperly filed campaign paperwork, Rep. Nima Kulkarni will appear on the ballot this November.
According to the Louisville Democratic Party, the 40th Legislative District Nominating Committee nominated Kulkarni to be their nominee for the 40th House District special election.
The incumbent had won her May primary but was challenged by former Rep. Dennis Horlander who argued Kulkarni filed improper paperwork when she decided to run for reelection.
Kulkarni has been serving the south Louisville community since 2018 after beating Horlander.
After a lower court ruling, the Kentucky Supreme Court disqualified Kulkarni in June.
It was not clear who the nominee would be, and the Supreme Court moved the issue to the Kentucky Secretary of State’s Office.
Secretary of State Michael Adams responded to the ruling stating he plans to allow both parties to nominate a candidate for an ultimate vote in November.
"I intend to permit the Democratic and Republican Parties to nominate candidates for this office, and give people a choice," Adams said in a statement released on Aug. 22.
Kulkarni’s lawyer had told WHAS11 News previously that Kulkarni had planned to seek the nomination.
Election Day is November 5.
