Will clouds get in the way of the eclipse?
The forecast for April 8, 2024 isn't perfect, but it could certainly be worse. No record heat, snow, or rain. However, there will be some clouds. The percentage of cloud cover will vary throughout the day.
Rain will push through overnight Sunday into early Monday and leave lingering cloud cover behind. At this point, it doesn't look like the clouds will ruin the view of the eclipse for Indiana as the clouds should not be opaque. There will still be visibility of the moon gradually covering the sun, but it will be somewhat reduced. Weather models suggest up to 75% cloud cover from Indianapolis to Evansville.
What will the temperature be?
Cue the warm up! By Monday, temperatures will climb into the low and middle 70s across the Ohio Valley. It will be a pleasant day for us temperature-wise. Definitely t-shirt weather.
What will weather across the U.S. look like?
A storm system will pass through overnight Sunday and start moving east of the Ohio Valley early Monday. Cities in Texas like Dallas and San Antonio could still be dealing with lingering rain and thick cloud cover, making for poor visibility of the eclipse.
Plan on increased cloud cover along the path of totality in Arkansas and southeastern Missouri. Temperatures will be quite warm, in the upper 70s to low 80s.
South and central Indiana communities will have a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures in the 70s. A southwesterly wind will be sustained from 5-15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph.
The best view of the eclipse will be in New England, where it is expected to be cloud free. Temperatures will be in the middle 50s for northeastern cities in the path of totality -- like Burlington, Vermont and Houlton, Maine.
