How can Louisville football make the ACC championship game?

Here are the three ways the 9-1 Cardinals can punch their ticket to the title game. Some are more complicated than others.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville football team is inching closer to securing a spot in the ACC championship game, but there's still some work left to be done.

The Cardinals (9-1, 6-1 ACC), ranked No. 9 in this week's College Football Playoff rankings, have been one of the biggest surprises of the season. They travel to Miami (6-4, 2-4) this weekend for their final conference game of the year before taking on Kentucky next week.

You can watch Saturday's game against the Hurricanes at noon on WHAS11.

There are three scenarios that will result in UofL playing for the ACC title. The easiest? Beat Miami.

"Everybody has probably looked at the internet and seen all the scenarios," head coach Jeff Brohm said Monday during a news conference. "When I try to look at it, I can't figure it out. So the only one I know of is if we win, good things will happen. We've got to go to Miami and find a way to win on their homefield. That would be a huge accomplishment by itself."

If Louisville loses Saturday, the scenarios get more complicated:

  • North Carolina loses to Clemson or N.C. State.
  • Virginia Tech loses to NC State or Virginia AND
    • Boston College beats Miami or Georgia Tech beats Syracuse.
    • - OR -
    • Pittsburgh beats Boston College AND N.C. State beats Virginia Tech AND Duke beats Virginia and Pittsburgh, or loses to both.

The 2023 ACC championship game will be played Dec. 2 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. No. 4 Florida State (10-0, 8-0) has already clinched a spot.

Louisville has never played in the ACC title game since joining the conference in 2014. The team's last conference championship came in 2012 as a member of the Big East.
