JCPS parents, students do what they can to stay cool in the heat

It didn't matter how hot it was going to be, Ronzelle Gregory and his family were going to show up to the high school football game.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — As the temperatures hit record highs, coaches and athletic directors in Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) are making sure athletes are well hydrated as they brace the heat on Thursday.

"Hat, sunglasses, two waters, and lots of enthusiasm; we're all good," parent Mary Cambron said.

Cambron and her daughter Kaitlin are doing the best they can in the bleachers at Iroquois High School.

They're thankful for a quick rain shower right that happened before the game against Waggener High school.

"I do think the rain helped a lot even though the benches are wet it's not a problem," Kaitlin said.

Just imagine how hot it is for the players on the field. That's why JCPS is making sure the turf isn't too hot.

"Turf field can get pretty hot and melt cleats and things like that," Dr. April Brooks, director of athletics and activities at JCPS, said. "So we took the extra expense of adding the cooling beads in," said

It didn't matter how hot it was going to be, Ronzelle Gregory and his family were going to show up.

"I got my bottle of H2O and I'm staying hydrated and I'm going to make sure I stay cool," Gregory said.

He even got creative trying to take cover under the shade.

"This is the umbrella I had to bring it out to block the sun to keep it off my family because the last time I was out here it was hot and this time I said I was going to do something different," Gregory said.

Terri Ethington and her husband Frank did the same thing.

"We got the umbrella which doubles as a fan if you twirl it real quick," she said.
