'Clear-cut tornado' went through Louisville, NWS says

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg reported at least one person has died potentially as a result of the severe weather.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A line of severe weather barreled through Kentuckiana on Wednesday bringing wind speeds of over 70 mph and even a few tornado warnings.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg reported at least one person has died potentially as a result of the severe weather.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Louisville's preliminary storm survey of damage found evidence of an EF-1 tornado with wind speeds of at least 90 miles per hour in the Newburg area off of Bishop Lane.

No injuries were reported, but extensive damage was noted by residents and businesses in the area. Roofs were blown off and several trees were snapped or uprooted.

John Gordon, meteorologist in charge at NWS Louisville, said it was "clear-cut."

"Clear-cut tornado, so you have wind damage from the trees and the insulation pattern from the north, northeast to the east, southeast," he said. "I'm going to be out tomorrow for sure in PRP and various places in the county. I'm pretty confident, I'll use the word compelling, that there's at least one more tornado in the county."

Greenberg said 13 roads were blocked from trees and power lines.

In Kentucky, just over 10,166 customers are without power. Of those, nearly 9,000 are LG&E customers.

A majority of LG&E's power outages are in these Louisville zip codes: 40213 and 40220.

"We do have about 250 resources, field resources, that are out there working and additional resources that are headed this way just as we reposition our crews to make sure that we're able to get service back up and running for them," LG&E spokesperson Natasha Collins said.

Across the Ohio River, some southern Indiana residents are without power as well. Duke Energy says a little more than 740 customers are without power.

Police also said they were investigating an overturned semi that happened on I-265 southbound near Dixie Highway. They added the high winds appeared to make the operator lose control and the driver struck a guardrail causing it to overturn.

Police said no injuries were reported in this incident.
