'It’s not a Russell problem, it’s a Metro Louisville problem': What the city is doing to curb gun violence

Louisville residents speak out after the latest Louisville shooting that left one person dead and another injured.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — One person was killed and another injured in a double shooting on 15th and Jefferson Street in the Russell neighborhood on Monday.

The two victims were found shot inside a car.

There have been over 50 shootings in the Russell neighborhood so far this year.

Long-time Russell resident and community activist Jackie Floyd told WHAS11 that she's always seen Russell as a safe neighborhood.

“It’s not a Russell problem, it’s a Metro Louisville problem," Floyd said. “Is there a possibility people are coming from the outside and creating this havoc? Trying to make my neighborhood unsafe.”

Floyd said she used to be able to be more lackadaisical in her neighborhood, but now makes sure she's aware of her surroundings.

“I tell my grandson, I tell him I love him and be safe. Because, I never know what’s going to happen when he goes out here," she said. “We have to start when the children are younger. We have to make sure that people are earning a livable wage, we have to make sure that their mental health needs are being addressed.”

Over on 35th and Bank, the Kroger parking lot was filled with a DJ and balloon animals, courtesy of Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) and the grocery store. It's a simple but high profile way for police to bring awareness to the violence right to the street corner.

"We go to every community throughout the city, and we let them know that we're here," LMPD Sgt. Tony Sacra said. "We want everyone to know their community is just as important as any other."

It's a show of solidarity to stop violence. Officers handed out gun locks, anti-steering devices for cars, and crime prevention information to keep the public informed.

It's a community leaning on each other, as LMPD continues to investigate the latest in a string of homicides this year.

There are currently no suspects. Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to call LMPD's anonymous tip line at (502) 574-5673 or use their online Crime Tip Portal.
