Thousands of LG&E customers without power in Louisville area after severe weather

A severe thunderstorm barreled through Kentucky and southern Indiana on the Fourth of July.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Thousands are without power in the Louisville area after a strong line of severe thunderstorms slowly made its way through the region.

Heavy rain and strong winds have left more than 1,100 LG&E customers without power as of 9:16 p.m. on Thursday.

That number has gone down from a peak of 11,000 customers earlier in the afternoon. The majority of outages are reported in Jefferson County.

It's unclear when power will be restored, however LG&E said it has crews assessing the condition.

At one point, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for parts of southern Indiana due to a radar indicated tornado. That warning was canceled just before the storm entered the Louisville Metro.

Parts of the WHAS11 viewing area remain under a flood watch until 8 p.m. It comes after inches of rain fell across the region on Wednesday causing localized flooding in some areas.

Remember! If you see water on the roadway, turn around, don't drown!

Several Fourth of July celebrations have already canceled or delayed festivities due to inclement weather.
