LOUISVILLE, Ky. — As we have seen with many of Louisville's biggest events, rainfall is often a factor, and it's the same deal for the PGA Championship this week at Valhalla Golf Club.
The championship tournament begins on Thursday, May 19 through Sunday, May 19.
Thankfully, there will be almost no chance for severe weather this week in Louisville, but there are still plenty of rain chances.
Tuesday
A slow-moving low pressure system will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms through early/mid afternoon, then we should get a decent break in the rain from mid to late afternoon.
Play was briefly suspended and fans were ordered to shelter in place at Valhalla due to inclement weather Tuesday morning.
Rainfall rates will likely pick back up Tuesday evening with a second band of showers moving into Kentucky and Indiana.
Winds will be light from the southeast at 5-10 mph. Temperatures will top out in the lower 70s.
According to PGA officials, in the event of severe weather, pay attention to leaderboards and videoboards for weather warnings. Signs will also be placed on the golf course, as was seen during the brief suspension earlier Tuesday.
"When the signs appear, spectators are advised to take precautions and seek shelter prior to play being suspended. If the sirens sound, seek shelter immediately," officials advised.
While the severe weather threat is very low, remember lightning safety tips if you're out on the golf course.
In the event of inclement weather, please remember to avoid the following:
- Tall and/or isolated trees
- Hilltops and high places
- Metal fences
- Telephone poles
- Open fields
- Golf carts
- Bodies of water
Wednesday
Moving forward to Wednesday, the slow-moving storm system will keep some scattered rain showers around in the morning, with isolated shower in the afternoon.
Wednesday's showers will likely be very light in nature.
Temperatures will be in the 60s in the morning, then 70s in the afternoon. Winds will be light from the north at 5-10 mph.
Thursday through Sunday
As we move to the tournament rounds Thursday through Sunday, it's looking half wet, and half dry. Our dry days being Thursday and Sunday, while Friday and Saturday will once again feature scattered rain chances.
Another slow-moving system will bring spotty downpours and a few thunderstorms Friday, with rain chances likely lingering into at least the first half of Saturday.
These conditions will likely promote slower green speeds and the ability to stop and spin the ball more on approach shots, which could lead to lower scores.
