Thousands without power in Louisville area as Helene remnants move in

Several Kentucky counties are under a high wind warning and flood watch as Tropical Storm Helene moves inland.

Duke Energy customers in Indiana could soon see increases on their electric bills.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Thousands of households in the Louisville area are without power Friday as the remnants from Tropical Storm Helene move their way through the state.

Helene made landfall late Thursday night as a major Category 4 hurricane in Florida. By Friday morning, Helene was downgraded to a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph over Georgia.

Many surrounding states, including South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana, are feeling the impacts of the storm.

As of 8:40 p.m. on Friday, there were about 6,300 households without power in Jefferson County, and more than 1950 power outages reported by LG&E in the state. About 400 of those are in Jefferson County.

Statewide, there were a whopping 80,807 LG&E customers without power.

The Louisville area is estimated to get about two inches of rain and wind gusts are expected to reach 40-50 mph throughout the day Friday. 

We will continue to see rain Saturday and Sunday, with relief from precipitation arriving around midnight on Sunday.
